About Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku Genealogy Academy

Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku Genealogy Academy Papa ʻĪʻī and Papa Malo students gather at Punaluu, Oahu

Our Mission

Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku is a royal academy and house of wisdom dedicated to the legacy of the Hawaiian aliʻi Kameʻeiamoku. The name draws on King Kalākaua's historical Hale Nauā (House of Wisdom), a society for the preservation of Hawaiian arts and sciences. This institution is designed to empower Kanaka Maoli and their families by providing them with the sacred genealogical knowledge of the past. It serves as a modern academy that uses ancient teachings to help a new generation thrive and succeed.

The curriculum of Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku is built on three core pillars, known as the "three M's," which define its commitment to comprehensive cultural and historical preservation. These are moʻokūʻauhau (genealogy), the foundational study of lineage and ancestral connections; moʻolelo (history and stories), the narratives that give context and meaning to the genealogies; and moʻomeheu (culture), the traditional practices and customs that bring the history and lineage to life. Together, these three areas of study ensure that students not only learn about their past but also acquire the knowledge and skills to actively perpetuate their heritage.

The foundational moʻolelo and moʻokūʻauhau teachings of the academy are rooted in the work of three master scholars, who form the "Mirepoix of the three M's." This essential trio consists of John Papa ʻĪʻī, a renowned scholar and keeper of historical fragments; David Malo, whose seminal work provides an extensive record of ancient Hawaiian society; and Samuel Mānaiakalani Kamakau, a prolific historian whose meticulous writings are a cornerstone of genealogical studies. These foundational readings are not just academic texts; they are the essential "flavor" and substance that give depth and authenticity to every student's journey in Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku.

Ultimately, Hale Nauā ʻO Kameʻeiamoku operates as the primary teaching arm of the MRC. The school directly fulfills the MRC's mission to empower the people of Hawaii through world-class educational training, leveraging the sacred mana of ancestral knowledge to provide students with the skills and reputation needed to thrive in today's world.
